The New Apple Walled Garden

So I have been doing some reading on the iPhone and I came across this article.

The New Apple Walled Garden Posted using ShareThis

He has some interesting comments about Apple’s use of opensource to build its product, and then locks down the updated product before they sell it.  None of this is really new to me, but it is pretty well layed out.  It makes me think some about getting an iPhone, but not that much.

Good article. I’ve been a little wary of the iPhone myself because of all the restrictions. Now, I’m no OSS fanboy (it’s hard to be when you’re a developer of proprietary software), but you have to draw the line somewhere.

The final nail in the coffin was that you couldn’t take legally obtained (or created) MP3s and use them as your ringtone, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the same is true for the iPod functionality too — they don’t get a piece of the pie that way.
